BUN FUN LEISURE SPACE (DESIGN CONSULT&BUILD)

LOCATION : POLYU INNOVATION TOWER 3F&6F
YEAR : 2016
SIZE : 60 SQFT
[COOPERATE WITH POLYU BUN FUN DESIGN TEAM]

Design Background:
We are invited to be the design consultant by the Bun Fun Group who are the graduated students for helping them further design a leisure space in Polyu innovation tower. “Bun Fun” is a previous academic project that the magnetic cushion is designed by students for creating soft and relaxing space. In this project, we have to use “Bun Fun” as the main element of the lesiure space.

Design Concept :
Design students always do research, sketch, discussion, even daydream to inspire themselves in order to come up with the ideas. All these creative actions need a relaxing mood. Therefore, we deign a bench in 3F for students lying down and getting closer; also the cushion can fit in the bench to get more comfortable gestures.
In 6F, we modify the size of cushion to allow students create their own forms to relaxing, also the table and electricity are provided for using laptop to do research and discussion.

Design Response to the society:
We have our own workshop to collect and treat the abandoned pallet wood for up-
cycling. The bench in 3F is made by pallet wood. Also, the wood of the tea table in 6F is purchased in the re-cycling wood-cutting factory. The modified cushions are made in Hong Kong Local Industry who employs the local retired tailors.

Lights flood the narrow space with warmth from the wood. Strings of thread cut at different lengths are hung from the ceiling, creating an ethereal silhouette of a dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit. These elements combined radiate the eternal love and warmth we receive from God. This installation celebrates the day of Pentecost, the arrival of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven by God. The softness of the hanging threads sway as slight movements of wind pass by, representing the intangible presence of the divine spirits. This delicate installation signifies the gentleness of God, but also the grace of the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Looking from below, the wings of the dove are spread out, wrapping the back wall and the surrounding walls with its casted shadows, embracing the Crucifix placed underneath the Holy Spirit in the middle, representing the Trinity of God. Church members are immersed in a sacred space of the light and warmth given from all the glories of the spirit of God.

Day after day, being confined in the forest of skyscrapers, struggling in the turbulence of life, is rarely do we have presence of mind to look into the sky, to savor the  calmness, to dispel the coldness in our heart by the warming sun. The Serenity is designed for users to sit inside and observe the clear sky.
